About Matt Mackman

Matt Mackman is a professional independent contemporary Artist with over 25 years of experience. With a growing reputation, his work can be found in a number of galleries across London and the South East. Although born and raised in Cornwall, it is the bright lights and excitement of the city that often influences Matt’s work as well as the notion of history, real or imagined.

Matt is currently working on two collections of paintings; one that melds Street Art and Fine Art to celebrate and investigate surviving Meningitis.  A lasting memory is that of his last rites being read to him. This set the tone for his ongoing work that reflects the ageing process and mortality. It also affected him in another way: whilst in a comatose state he suffered a series of repetitive dreams, which he feels was his visual life flashing before his eyes.

Graffiti, journals/diaries and popular culture are all referenced in the collection. Slick advertising campaigns and billboard posters are altered, logos distorted, images aged in order to challenge preconceived ideas of beauty and the impermanence of the physical form.

The other is a series of battlefield paintings created in response to his grandfather’s experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war. Found imagery, stencilling, paint, papers, varnishes and powders are amongst the materials and techniques used to create his work. Matt combines these elements in a way to produce multi-layered and rich-textured work that invites the viewer to look closer… and then closer still.

Matt intends to take the viewer on a dreamlike journey through both collections of paintings: at times feeling comforted and uplifted by familiar forms and imagery used, whilst at other times feeling a sense of unease or discomfort.

Beauty and decay. Life and death. Peace and chaos. Light and dark. Dreams and nightmares. These are the things that keep Matt awake (and painting) at night.
